Professor John Gambo Laah is a professor of Geography from Kaduna State University, Kaduna. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the University of Benin, Benin City and the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra. He started his working career in 1989 as Population Programme Officer in the Federal Ministry of Health & Human Services, Lagos. He was the Visits Officer (Aid) of the British High Commission Lagos from 1994 to 1996. He joined ABU Zaria in 1999 as Assistant Lecturer and rose to the rank of a Professor in 2014. He joined Kaduna State University in April 2014. He was elected Head of Department of Geography in 2014, elected Dean of Faculty of Science in April 2016 and was appointed Dean of Postgraduate School in 2018. Prof. Laah is the pioneer and former Vice Chancellor of Greenfield University, Kaduna.
Professor John Laah presented the 4th Professorial Inaugural Lecture in KASU in April 2018 entitled, “Population, Environment and Climate Change: Interrogating Realities and Illusions”.
Professor Laah has been a member of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) since 2005. He had served as the Northwest Zonal Representative, National Secretary and 3rd Vice President of the ANG. He is currently the 2nd Vice President. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Speaking of Nigeria; Fellow, Chartered Institute of Human Capital Development of Nigeria and Fellow, Institute of Chartered Economics of Nigeria.
He has served in a number of Committees at the Federal and State levels. He was the Consultant Census for Kaduna State in 2005/2006. He served as the Chairman, Technical Committee for the Drafting of the Kaduna State Policy on Environment, in 2018. He was member of the Technical Reference Group (TRG) for the Drafting of Kaduna State Peace Commission Strategic Plan 2018-2022. He was appointed by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as a member of the Committee to Review the Existing Chieftaincy System in Kaduna State in 2017. He is a member of the Southern Kaduna Joint Peace Committee (SKLPC) and a Member of the Academic Advisory Board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.
His research interest is on population dynamics, climate change and environmental migration. Professor Laah is a philosopher, whose work is largely based on the application of geographic models in solving contemporary developmental problems. Prof. Laah is the Chairman, Industry Relations, Kaduna State University. Professor John Gambo Laah holds the traditional title of Iyan Mabushi in Mabushi District of Atyap Chiefdom (Kaduna State). He is the Chairman of the Forum of Southern Kaduna Professors with a membership strength of 187 professors.
