What is going on in President Emmanuel Macron's France? I had an offline chat recently with our Chairman, Dr Jones Edobor, during which we agreed that for the benefit of members of NGR who may be interested, it may be useful for me to throw some light on the internal political upheaval currently rocking France, EU's second largest economy after Germany.
As I write President Emmanuel is reported to have shortened a visit to Poland so as to return early this Thursday 12th December evening and announce tomorrow, Friday 13th Dec. morning, the name of his new Prime Minister, the 4th in less than one year.
The immediate past Prime Minister, Michel Barnier (waiting to hand over to his successor) spent barely 3 months in office, making him the most short-lived Prime Minister in the 66 years of France's 5th Republic. He was recently destituted by the National Assembly, following the use by him of the famous "Article 49.3" of the French Constitution to pass his 2025 Budget. Article 49.3 enables Prime Minister to break a deadlock and pass any Bill blocked by interminable debates.
